Welcome to Empress Tips! I’m thrilled to have you here, and this is the first post of many to come. The plan on this blog is to share beauty tips and tricks, talk about the latest industry trends and, like what’s to come, step-by-step tutorials.
When I was going through what I wanted to do for the first post, I couldn’t help but start with this Crystal Lip tutorial.
This look was first inspired by Mina, who is an exceptionally talented makeup artist. I highly recommend following her on Instagram @theminaficent, it will be well worth your time.
Having been a fan of her’s, I sent Mina a set of our Iridescent Ice nails, and she came up with a look that I instantly fell in love with. Check it out here:
In this tutorial I’m going to walk you through the exact step-by-step process to achieve this stunning Crystal Lip look.
Although it may look complicated, it’s pretty straight forward and took me about less than 10 minutes from start to finish – and that was covering both my upper and lower lips completely in crystals.
Here’s a list of what you’ll need for this look:
- Lip gloss (lipstick is OK too)
- Adhesive Eyelash Glue (clear)
- 75-100 16ss Flatback Rhinestones
- Crystal Katana (optional)
So, without further ado let’s get into this tutorial:
STEP 1: APPLY LIP GLOSS
To start off this look you’ll want to apply a foundation of Lip Gloss as a base layer that matches the color of the rhinestones that you’ll be applying.
For this particular look I used Smashbox “Forever” lip gloss, which is matched well with the crystals that I using.
I’m using lip gloss instead of lipstick because lip gloss is more sticky and acts as an extra adhesive layer, however feel free to use lipstick if you’d like.
Simply apply your lip gloss as you normally would, and move on to step 2:
STEP 2: THROW SOME GLITTER ON IT
Once you’ve got your base foundation of lip gloss on, it’s time to throw some glitter on your lips.
For this particular look I used Eye Kandy’s Jellybean glitter.
As with the lip gloss, the color of the glitter is completely up to you, and should be something that matches well with the color of the crystals you’re applying.
The possibilities are endless, so don’t be afraid to get creative!
STEP 3: APPLY CLEAR ADHESIVE EYELASH GLUE
You’ve got your lip gloss and glitter on, and now it’s time to apply your adhesive eyelash glue.
The brand I use and recommend is clear Strip Lash Adhesive with aloe by Kiss.
It is super important that you use a clear adhesive and not black or brown version!
We’re using this only for the adhesive and not for any cosmetic effect.
When applying the applying the adhesive glue I prefer to do it in small sections, and then immediately apply the crystals.
While it is perfectly fine to cover your whole lip and then apply the crystals, I recommend applying the glue in sections, as applying the rhinestones can be a bit tricky if you have never done this before.
Speaking of applying the rhinestones….
STEP 4: APPLY RHINESTONES
For this particular look I used Austrian LUX’s Crystal AB. They are flatback rhinestones and in size 16ss.
After applying all crystals, I counted a total of 67 that it took to cover my lips.
With that said, I’d recommend having at least 75-100 depending on the size of your lips.
Before we move on to applying the crystals, here are a few websites where you can purchase your rhinestones from:
TWO WAYS TO APPLY THE RHINESTONES TO YOUR LIPS:
There are two tools I recommend for applying the rhinestones to your lips:
Option 1: Use a Tweezer
Using a tweezer to pickup and apply the crystals is relatively straight forward and easy to do at first- but there is a slight downside…
The tweezer will work perfectly fine when you first start applying the crystals to your lips.
However, when you start filling up your lips, it can be tricky to place the crystals in the exact spot you want without the sides of the tweezers getting in the way.
This isn’t the end of the world, and the way to work around it is to simply use one end of the tweezer to guide the crystal into place. It is a bit more tricky and time consuming, but it works and is not that complicated after some trial and error.
With that said, I prefer to apply my crystals using…
OPTION 2: CRYSTAL KATANA PICK UP TOOL
For the smoothest crystal application, I’ve found that using a pickup tool to be best.
The primary reason for this is because, as a opposed to using a tweezer, the pickup tool grabs the crystal by the back instead of having to grab it by the sides, as seen here:
The pickup tool that I’ve been using is the Crystal Katana. I also use this to apply crystals to our Iridescent Ice nails.
Again, application with a tweezer is perfectly doable, but the Crystal Katana makes the process even easier. If you plan on wearing crystals on the regular, I’d definitely recommend picking one up.
Here’s a short clip of me applying the rhinestones with both tweezers and the Crystal Katana. You’ll also get a good idea of how to apply the adhesive glue in sections as I mentioned above:
Removal is easy and straightforward. When you’re ready for the crystals to come off, simply soak a paper towel in warm water and wipe your lips. The crystals and glue will come off quite easily.
